F1 Academy for Dummies

by Alex Johnston

The first weekend of the F1 Academy season is underway but a lot of people I'm sure still don't have a full understanding of how the Formula 4 based series works or the drivers are divided.

So to start, The Drivers and teams:

There are 5 teams(Campos, MP Motorsport, Rodin, PREMA & ART Grand Prix) of 3 drivers each. As part of plans to grow the series, Formula 1 teams must nominate at least one driver to run in the teams colours this year.

The teams line up as follows:

ART Grand Prix

Bianca Bustamante - McLaren - #16 🇵🇭

Aurelia Nobels - no F1 team - #22 🇧🇷

Lia Block - Williams - #57 🇺🇸

Campos

Chloe Chambers - Haas - #14 🇺🇸

Carrie Schreiner - Stake - #15 🇨🇭

Nerea Marti - no F1 team° - #30 🇪🇸

Wildcard entry

A 16th car will join the grid in PREMA colours, with a driver from the each region raced in figuring on the race weekend. For Saudi Arabia, the first driver has been named as Reema Juffali.

Weekend format

As in other lower formula, the weekend is broken into one practice session, followed by qualifying. Some rounds will feature two practice sessions. Practice sessions will last 40 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of qualifying.

Two races take place, with both a maximum of 30 minutes(generally around 15-18 laps per race).

Point scoring

Points are scored as in regular F1, with 25 to the winner, with further points scored in descending order to 10th place which gets a point(25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1). A further two points are awarded for the driver on pole position, and a single point is awarded for a driver scoring the fastest race lap - provided they're in the top 10 finishers.
