F4 records, Dad’s help and Schumacher: 10 More Questions to a Racing Driver with Alex Dunne

My first returning guest for this latest segment, a sort of part 2 to the usual 10 Questions to a Racing Driver, is British F4 champion and Irish superstar Alex Dunne!

When I spoke with Alex last year, he was just at the start of what was going to be a very good year for him in British F4 and Italian F4.

Alex would go on to win the British F4 title with Hitech Grand Prix, dominating the series and setting a record for the most wins in a season, winning 11 of the 27 races to beat the record previously held by one Lando Norris, set in 2015. In the Italian F4 iteration, he managed an overall 2nd place championship finish for US Racing falling short of the Italian teenager Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a Mercedes Junior Team driver.

Onto the questions!

1. Who's your racing hero or heroes?Michael Schumacher is my racing hero.

2. What's the first memory you have of racing? The first memory I have is from my first race win, it was my 2nd ever race, and I had a special signal with my dad for when I should take the lead, which then won me the race!

📣 Alex's dad Noel was also a racing driver, winning the Irish Formula Ford F1600 series twice.

3. What's the best car you've driven so far? Best car I’ve driven is GB3, the downforce was incredible and so satisfying when you hook up a lap!

📸 Alex will race in the GB3 Championship this year, again with Hitech.

4. What's your proudest moment so far? My proudest moment was either breaking the record for most wins in British F4 in a single season, or winning the Championship!

📸 A familiar sight in 2022; Alex Dunne leads a British F4 race.

5. Your favourite overtake you've done so far? My favourite overtake was the double move I did in Turn 4 at Misano in Italian F4, which put me on the podium!

6. Would you rather race on a street course or an oval? I would rather a street circuit, there’s something special about racing on the limit so close to the walls!

📣 GB3, unfortunately doesn't feature any street circuits but the winner of the series gets a 'free of charge' FIA F3 test and if a driver can impress in a test, Monaco beckons....

7. If you could pick any teammate, past or present, I think I’d pick Max Verstappen, he’s arguably the best driver in Formula 1 at the moment, so seeing how I would compare to him, and learning from him would be very beneficial!

📸 Reigning two time world champion Max Verstappen wouldn't be the worst person to learn from!

8. No gym, no sim, no travel, no racing; how would you spend a whole day off? I would spend time with my family/dogs, or sit wondering how I can get all of this things back 😂😂

9. If you could drive any race car, past or present, what car would you choose? I think I would chose the 2021 era of Formula 1, the downforce those cars had were incredible and experiencing those type of speeds would be amazing!

📸 2021 saw us treated to a titanic battle for the ages between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, and the cars were all pretty good too!

10. What’s the strangest thing to happen to you while you’ve been in the car? Nothing strange has happened to me in the car as of yet(touch wood).😅

📸 Nothing strange yet(touch wood) has happened to Alex while racing, cause for celebration!

Thanks Alex for another great chat and some great answers! Hopefully we can do something else again soon! Best of luck to Alex as he embarks on the next big step of his career.

As aforementioned; Alex will race in GB3 this year which is bound to be an exciting series to watch with the Chinese and British F4 champions in Gerrard Xie and Alex involved as well as returning drivers Max Esterson and Callum Voisin, Spanish F4's third place finisher Tymoteusz Kucharczyk and Red Bull Junior Team driver Souta Arao among many of the names, and more competing!

The series kicks off in the second week of April, watch out for it!
