FIA F3 at 100 races: three left field race winners from F3

By Alex Johnston

This Sunday’s Barcelona Feature Race in FIA Formula 3 marks the 100th race since the series rebranded from GP3. In that time we’ve seen five champions, one of which is now a fixture in F1! But what about the outsiders? A mass of names have featured in the series, but which names had a special moment despite maybe not being a regular front runner or maybe even points finisher?

Bent Viscaal - 70th Anniversary Sprint Race, 2020

📸 Viscaal topped the podium, ahead of Lirim Zendeli and a 17 year old Theo Pourchaire.

In perhaps one of the best final laps I’ve even seen, Bent Viscaal - who had sat behind Lirim Zendeli the majority of the race - took the lead into Copse Corner, but that wasn’t the end. Zendeli, who had passed reverse grid pole sitter Ben Barnicoat to lead, once again re-passed Viscaal before Stowe but the Dutchman once again passed his German-Albanian counterpart off the exit of the Vale chicane to take a stunning win by just 0.189s over the finish line.

Viscaal currently races in the ELMS championship, and has competed in Le Mans and IMSA after a stint in Formula 2 with Trident.

📸 Still scooping podiums in sports cars.

Other notable names in this race: Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson, Theo Pourchaire, Logan Sargeant, Frederik Vesti, Jack Doohan.

Lorenzo Colombo - Spa sprint race, 2021

📸 Celebrations in Hungary were null and void for Campos.

A week on from being stripped of a win in Hungary due to a Safety Car infringement, Lorenzo Colombo took a dominant win at Spa-Francorchamps in an act of serious redemption.

The Italian mastered wet conditions to win by a stunning 13 seconds in Belgium but would end the year just 15th overall but has since gone on to have success in sports cars but hasn’t been seen racing since 2022.

📸 Belgian redemption for Colombo as he rejoices with Jak Crawford and Roman Stanek.

Other notable names in this race: Jack Doohan, Dennis Hauger, Logan Sargeant, Frederik Vesti, Jak Crawford.

Jonny Edgar - Monza Feature Race, 2023

📸 Edgar(middle) with O’Sullivan and Barnard.

Jonny Edgar’s long wait for a win in Formula 3 ended in the final race of the 2023 season as he headed an all British podium in front of Taylor Barnard and Zak O’Sullivan at Monza.

In what turned out to be his final race in F3 after three seasons, Edgar managed the race well, battling with Caio Collet for the lead before holding off his compatriots to cross the line first.

📸 Edgar won in F3 at the 52nd and final attempt. Hard earned!

What other wins come to mind?
