Hamilton set for new race engineer in 2025

by Tilly Measures

Following Lewis Hamilton’s surprise move to Ferrari, announced earlier this season, it has just been announced that Bonnington - often referred to as Bono - will remain at Mercedes following Hamilton’s departure.

This was announced ahead of this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix, where Hamilton will start the second half of his final season with Mercedes. Bono has worked with Lewis since 2013, and have won six world championship titles together.

Bono will assume his new role as Head of Race Engineering for Mercedes with immediate effect according to a Mercedes spokesperson who confirmed this news to formulaone.com and will start this new role alongside his current role with Hamilton for the remainder of the 2024 season.

He will then also continue in his current role next year as a race engineer for a driver though for now it remains unclear on who that could be. Mercedes protégé and F2 driver Kimi Antonelli is a favourite to get the seat.

However, this situation is not unfamiliar to F1 as it’s a similar arrangement to what Red Bull have with Gianpiero Lambiase working as their head of race engineering whilst also continuing his role as Max Verstappen’s race engineer.
