My top 3 moments from Season 9 of ABB FIA Formula E

By Linus O'Howell

Season 9 of ABB FIA Formula E was a hell of a ride that gave us plenty of dramatic moments. In this piece I give you my top 3 moments from a year where a new Champion was crowned.

Pascal Wehrlein VS Jake Dennis in Diriyah

Round 2 and 3 of this year’s championship took place in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia and we were treated to two excellent fights between TAG Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein and Avalanche Andretti’s Jake Dennis.

Round 2 saw Wehrlein take the chequered flag first despite starting 9th, as he was able to hold off Dennis who went from 11th to 2nd. I remember watching this race and being stunned at just how easy Wehrlein and Dennis were able to get through the field.

📸 Ex-F1 driver Wehrlein took an early championship lead in Formula E, before Dennis stole a march on the German.

Round 3 the following day saw Pascal qualify 5th whilst Jake would line up alongside him on the 3rd row of the grid. In the end, the same result occurred as the two men climbed through the field as Wehrlein once again beat Dennis to the flag, taking the lead of the Championship in the process.

ABT CUPRA’s shocking 1-2 in Qualifying

On the 23rd April in Berlin, Formula E Qualifying took place around Tempelhof Airport. It was a very wet day which made the conditions super tricky for all the Drivers, but I don’t think anybody in their wildest dreams would’ve been able to predict the outcome of this session.

ABT CUPRA, who were bottom of the Teams’ Championship without a point to their name heading into this round, locked out the front row as Robin Frijns beat teammate Nico Muller to both Pole Position and 3 points! This was complete and utter insanity which I absolutely loved!

Jake Dennis seals the Championship at home in bonkers London E-Prix

In the penultimate race of the season in London, Jake Dennis was crowned as the new World Drivers’ Champion for Season 9 of ABB FIA Formula E. Whilst that was an incredibly special moment, the race itself deserves to be talked about as it was completely insane!

Some of those moments include; Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy and Sebastian Buemi colliding at the front of the field, a moment that ultimately ended Cassidy’s chances of winning the title. Rene Rast completely wiped out fellow German Pascal Wehrlein at Turn 1 before Rast pulled over to the side of the circuit, just seconds before a Red Flag was called (out).

On the restart, Buemi had absolutely no pace and a divebomb from Norman Nato in the penultimate corner resulted in a literal car park which resulted in another Red Flag. Antonio Felix da Costa, who was running P2 with a lap to go, was demoted to the back of the field with a 3-minute time penalty for a technical infringement. Trust me when I tell you that this race had everything!

Eyes are now on next season, with the driver market in full flow!
