Newey confirmed by Aston Martin

by Alex Johnston

In what is perhaps a slightly ‘shock’ move, master F1 designer Adrian Newey has joined Aston Martin for 2025 and beyond, ending his 18 year stint with Red Bull.

Newey joins the Aston Martin project at a time where the famous green team aren’t in the top five fastest teams, but ahead of a major engine change from Mercedes to Honda in a 2026 - Honda of course with a recent connection to Newey resulting in championship wins with the Red Bull team.

📸 Newey is set to leave his familiar Red Bull setup for Aston Martin.

Aston Martin will become Newey’s sixth different team he’s worked with in Formula 1 spanning back to the late 1980’s and early 1990’s with March(who became Leyton House), before moving onto Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.

📸 A collection of Newey masterpieces.

Newey is regarded as the greatest ever to do it, in terms of car design and is a throwback to a bygone era with the simplicity he goes about his role with, famously still working with pen and pad or on a whiteboard to create the cars that have brought him 14 world championship wins, with seven different drivers over 30 years in the sport, starting with Nigel Mansell in 1992 for Williams and all the way up to Max Verstappen last season…next up; Lance Stroll?

📸 Lance Stroll has had varied success in F1, could he be a big beneficiary of Newey’s shock switch?

With Honda’s involvement coming, it’s likely Fernando Alonso may not be a part of it for the foreseeable, could he seal a world championship before Lawrence Stroll attempts to tempt another star to partner his son at the team? A signing of Newey’s magnitude would certainly be of appeal to any big name in the sport, even the likes of Max Verstappen. Verstappen-Stroll line up in 2026 or 2027? Leclerc-Stroll? Exciting times ahead for Aston Martin, the Stroll’s, Honda and of course, all of us as fans to see more teams join the championship hunt.
