Ones to watch, episode 12: Paul Aron

by Alex Johnston

If ever a driver was a mark of consistency in racing, they’d race exactly like Formula 2’s Paul Aron. At the mid season point, Aron sits third in the F2 standings for the Hitech team - despite having not won a race in the first 20 races of the season so far.

The Estonian stepped up to F2 after a single season in FIA F3 that saw him take one win and three further podiums for PREMA Racing - mustering 14 points finishes from the 18 races in the season, a consistency he has carried into F2.

He’s so far taken 14 points finishes in his rookie season - the majority of which the former Mercedes junior driver has ended up in the top five and cemented his place in the championship fight, taking seven podiums along the way, as well as three pole positions, but win for Aron as well as Hitech remains elusive.

His season has not been without incident, particularly in Hungary where poor race starts ruined his weekend, as well as that of Zane Maloney who had his race ended by Aron in a clumsy accident.

Further to his F2 campaign Aron has been testing Formula E machinery with Envision Racing which led to him debuting in the series in place of veteran Sebastien Buemi at the Berlin E-Prix double header weekend.

📸 Ex Mercedes junior Aron finished 13th and 14th in his two races in Formula E.

As he is not currently a member of an F1 academy setup, it’s hard to see an in for the 20 year old in terms of getting a seat but teams are hopefully looking at his capabilities as his potential and consistency would be highly valued by any team. Formula E seems a likely future destination but only time will tell for Aron.
