Rivalries, Barcelona and F2004: 10 Questions to a Racing Driver with Matt Round-Garrido

My latest guest on ‘10 Questions’ is Matt Round-Garrido. The Spanish-British racer has been racing in America, largely in feeder series’ to the NTT IndyCar Series.

Matt has been racing in America since 2019 and is advancing up the ranks and making a name for himself.

Outside of racing, Matt is a football fan, supporting Barcelona, and is also a driver coach, working with the likes of Max Marzorati, who is currently a title contender in the GB4 Championship.

Also in his spare time, Matt posts onboard footage of his racing on his social media channels. Check out his Instagram for more: https://instagram.com/mattroundgarrido?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Onto Matt’s answers!

1. Hairpins or chicanes? Chicanes. I love the quick change of direction, and using the kerbs has such a good feel when you hit the perfect speed through it.

2. Long straights or slow corners? Slow corners. Corners are for racers. Straights are just driving.

3. Understeer or oversteer? Depends on the circuit really. For fast and high speed circuits I like a bit of understeer, but on the technical circuits definitely a bit of oversteer.

4. Fast circuits or technical circuits? When I was in Formula Ford I liked the technical circuits, but now, I definitely prefer being on the fast circuits.

5. Wet races or wet/dry races? Wet/dry races. I like the mixed conditions, it’s a variable. I enjoy the adventure per lap hunting for grip.

6. What’s your favourite circuit you’ve raced? I don’t really have one! I like them all, bar one or two…but I better not say which ones they are!

7. What’s your favourite you’ve NOT raced? It was Laguna Seca before I raced there, but now it’s Barcelona. I’ve got a family connection there, it’d be quite cool to go to my cousin’s house for tea after the race!

📸 Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona. Almost a home race for Matt who’s mother is Spanish.

8. Your favourite F1 livery? The 2004 Ferrari, but I also like the Jaguar from the same year.

📸 The Jaguar R5, driven by Christian Klein before Jaguar transitioned to Red Bull Racing in 2005.

9. Your favourite helmet design ever? Mine! Mine is based off a one a family friend and old racing driver had, Ray Grimes.

10. Who is the best driver you’ve raced against? Two immediately come to mind. The first is Christian Rasmussen. I lived with him when I first moved to America and I’ve got quite a brotherly rivalry with him, we get on really well. I always want to beat him! The other is Matt Davis who I raced in karting around 2013, he was really quick.

Thanks to Matt for taking the time to talk with me! We’ll be sure to do something more in depth again sometime!
