Sebastian Vettel gets on Instagram; but why now?

Sebastian Vettel surprised everyone last night with unveiling of a brand new Instagram account, despite the fact the German has gone his entire career without using any kind of official social media. The beloved driver till now has been an anomaly; a famous person with no social media footprint.

Why now then? The outspoken German I’d imagine feels he can get his points across more by putting his thoughts where everyone can see them; on a site with in excess of 1 billion monthly users, and 500 million daily users.

That or you can feed into recent comments from Sky’s Ted Kravitz, who claimed Vettel was behaving like he was planning for retirement, referencing his recent outing in Silverstone driving Nigel Mansell’s Williams, as well as other ‘strange activities’ including taking his children out to the recent Austrian Grand Prix, which is slightly odd from Vettel who likes himself and his family to lead a quiet life, similar to his hero, Michael Schumacher. Aston Martin at this stage are believed to have offered terms to Vettel which are yet to be accepted.

The 4 time world champion has in his Instagram account bio, that “THERE IS STILL A RACE TO WIN”, a hint towards any one of the high number of issues plaguing the world still in 2022, from equal rights, to war, to water shortages, saving bees and global warming, all of which Vettel has tried to draw attention to.

📸 An activist: Vettel supports many causes, ranging from equal rights, to saving the bees.

In a 2020 interview with Formula 1, Vettel said “It’s designed to give you more time, but it actually does the opposite”, in reference to technology, following up with a further quote as follows on the same subject; “A lot of the stuff is designed to actually steal your time to get you hooked. It annoys me, so I’m not a fan of that. Ultimately there is no solution, there is only yourself, and your behaviour with the tools you have and the funny thing is that a lot of the stuff is designed to make life simpler and give you more time, but it actually does the opposite, it makes it complicated.”

Speaking on social media in the same interview the Aston Martin star said “I never tried it and I think it’s a good thing because a lot of people tell me they can’t get away from it. I have never tried it so I’m not missing it. I’ve seen how it works with other people roughly and as far as I can tell, it’s done in a way that obviously you’re addicted.”

However now with the best way to grab peoples attention being by getting to them where they are the most, Seb’s eyes and ears have led him to social media.

I don’t expect the German driver to use it a lot, but when he does, read or listen to what he’s got to say, because it’s probably pretty damn important. Go drop him a follow, you’ll thank yourself, and Seb, link below.

An announcement is due from Seb’s account at 12pm.
