The biggest driver move for years: Lewis Hamilton to join Ferrari from 2025

by Alex Johnston

Perhaps the most shocking driver transfer since Michael Schumacher left Benetton for Ferrari in 1995, it's been officially announced that seven time world champion Lewis Hamilton will join the Ferrari team for 2025.

Hamilton will leave the Mercedes squad having joined in 2013 from McLaren and will fulfill every racing driver and fan's dream of racing for the Maranello outfit. The move sees him reunite with Fred Vasseur, who was team principal of ART Grand Prix in the early 2000's as Hamilton race for them.

The arrival of the Brit means Carlos Sainz will exit the Scuderia and Hamilton will partner Charles Leclerc.

The move has sent shockwaves through the F1 fans and media with many believing to this point that Hamilton's opportunity to join Ferrari had been and gone, and that he'd be likely to see put his F1 racing days with Mercedes.

Hamilton's transfer is likely to kick off F1's silliest ever 'silly season' with almost three quarters of the grid out of contract at the end of 2024, and of course Hamilton's seat need filled with Esteban Ocon and Alex Albon rumoured to be among the early contenders. The only confirmed entries for 2025 are Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and now Lewis Hamilton. The rest have options to assess ahead of 2025. Exciting times to come.
