The Driver Who Helped Me Love Racing - Sophia’s Choice: Lewis Hamilton

by Sophia Fallows

My first experience of live motor-racing was Formula Renault 3.5 at three years old with my protective headset on, and not having a clue what was going on around me, watching from the stands of Silverstone at all the whizzing cars passing by me in awe of the sheer speed the machines were chasing each other at.

When I had a better understanding of what motorsport was, thanks to my very persistent Dad, I was glued to the settee every weekend watching the Grand Prix during the era of Hamilton domination. So inevitably ‘#44’ was the favourite driver of the household, and still very much is. Seeing a young driver achieving what only some can dream of, becoming a household name and conquering the infamous greats he raced alongside, piqued my interest.

The way Lewis presents himself on and off the track makes him hard to dislike. Not only is Lewis arguably the best formula driver of the current generation and potentially the greatest of all time, but he is also heavily involved in philanthropy and uses his fame and success to make a positive impact beyond the racing circuit - such as donating millions of pounds to causes related to youth, education and employment.

Hamilton’s strategic driving led him to be a 7-time world champion and hold several world records. He is renowned for his smooth driving style which allows him to maintain control of his car and minimise tyre wear.

And as we saw at the British Grand Prix the other week, ‘Still He Rises’.

📸 105 wins(and counting).
