The good, the bad & the ugly: The Australian Grand Prix weekend

by Alex Johnston

The Australian GP weekend is over, with plenty of talking points over the Formula 1, 2 and 3 series that took to the Albert Park circuit across the event. Crashes, world champions with mechanical failures and mass awarding of penalties for plenty people talking. In this new feature, we'll visit three main events that took place.

First up...

The Good

Firstly, Max Verstappen is a statistical anomaly and the best driver on the current grid. However...it was great to see him not win a race for once.

📸 Verstappen's brake caught fire as he retired.

Carlos Sainz picked up the pieces to scoop the win, having passed Verstappen a couple of laps before the Dutchman's car retired. A very refreshing sight to see someone else atop the podium. Made even better by the fact that 16 days prior, Carlos Sainz lay in a Saudi Arabian hospital recovering from an appendectomy. What a turn around by 'Chilli'. Still no 2025 seat...

The Bad

Across the series, we saw a number of high velocity crashes - notably Alex Albon in FP2 and George Russell in the race as well as Dennis Hauger for MP Motorsport in the F2 Feature Race.

📸 Hauger walks away from his wrecked car.

We don't want to see that. Luckily, all drivers escaped unscathed but they were some scary moments.

The Ugly

'The Ugly' comes from Formula 3 where in the one and only practice session the teams have we saw a very odd moment between Irish driver Alex Dunne and Alpine Academy's Bulgarian teenager Nikola Tsolov.

Dunne appeared to be trying to get tyre temperature ready for a push lap in the session, but seemed very much to be on the racing line ahead of Tsolov. Tsolov happened upon the MP Motorsport car and swerved to take avoiding action before seemingly turning BACK IN on Dunne, punting the Irishman into the wall.

📸 Dunne sits in his stricken car after Tsolov's inexplicable action.

Despite many calling for a race ban, the stewards handed down a three place grid penalty to Tsolov, which seemed very lenient. Dunne was given a reprimand for his part in the accident.

📸 Tsolov was lucky to escape with a grid drop.
