The Voice of Formula 2: a tribute to Alex Jacques as he prepares to leave F2 role

by Alex Johnston

To group names as ‘iconic’ and align them with the likes of Murray Walker is bold but for Formula 2, Alex Jacques ticks the boxes. Jacques will depart the role so many have associated him with for years after the Abu Dhabi race weekend.

Jacques has held the role since 2015, when the series was still known as GP2 and has commentated on the junior careers of a number of Formula 1’s current crop including Pierre Gasly, Oscar Piastri, Charles Leclerc, George Russell and Yuki Tsunoda, among others.

His enthusiasm and energy was a huge factor in his popularity among fans, particularly when sharing the commentary box with the excitable Davide Valsecchi or with his first co-commentator, the knowledgable Jolyon Palmer.

Jacques covered many notable F2 moments, including Oscar Piastri’s dominant title charge, Nobuharu Matsushita’s unlikely Barcelona win, Charles Leclerc’s Bahrain sprint masterclass, chaos in Baku - and the difficult weekend in Spa in 2019 where racing lost Anthoine Hubert, a moment Jacques handled with tact, grace, dignity and respect.

We wish Alex all the best in his future endeavours and look forward to hearing his voice again and again. Thanks Alex, the unmistakable voice of Formula 2.
